Load Battery Tester – How Does It Work?
Preparing the Load for Battery Testing
- Check the condition of the battery tester and its cables. Ensure they are in good condition and have no mechanical damage.
- Ensure a safe place for conducting the test. Avoid explosive gases and flammable materials!
- You don't need to check the battery status – the BLT600S load will do it for you.
- Your safety is paramount! Familiarize yourself with the warning signs on the load body and adhere to them.
Connecting the Load Tester to the Battery
- Connect the connector to any battery terminal (post, screw, etc.) and apply the load tip to the other terminal. The test can be conducted without maintaining polarity. The clamp can be connected to either the positive or negative post of the battery.
- Ensure the connections are strong and stable.
- The device will automatically activate if the voltage of the tested battery is higher than 1V, and then conduct an efficiency test.
- If the resting voltage of the battery is lower than 1V, you can manually activate the tester by clicking the left button on the voltmeter panel.
- Before starting the load test, ensure the tested battery is fully charged.
Selecting Parameters and Load Range of the Load
- On the tester, select the appropriate current load range depending on the battery capacity:
- 12V: typically ranges 200A, 400A, 600A.
- 6V: typically ranges 100A, 200A, 300A.
- The range is selected using knobs on the load. The device has 3 circuits – each 200A for a 12V battery. When testing a 6V battery, the resistance of 1 spring is 100A.
The first load circuit is permanently closed. By tightening the knob, you close the circuit, activating the next winding. This way, you increase the resistance by another 200A/100A.
Conducting a Basic Load Test
- Press the device against the terminal.
- Observe the voltage measurement on the display. The tester will subject the battery to the declared load.
- Pay attention to the results:
- For a functional 12V battery – the voltage displayed should drop and stabilize above 8.5V
- If the battery is faulty, the voltage will drop towards 0V
- The load test should not last longer than 10s.
Conducting a Semi-Automatic Load Test
- Press the left button on the voltmeter, and a time lapse bar measuring 6 seconds will appear below the battery voltage on the display, which will start filling after pressing the tester.
- Press the device against the terminal.
- Observe the voltage measurement on the display. The tester will subject the battery to the declared load and inform with a double beep about the end of the test.
- Stop pressing the load – you can disconnect from the terminal of the tested battery.
- After pressing the right button on the battery tester display, a graphical voltage course, maximum and minimum measured voltage, and measured voltage difference will be presented.
- The load test lasts 6s – after this time, the tester will inform about the end of the data collection stage. After exceeding 9s, an audible alarm is activated.
Turning Off the Tester and Disconnecting the Cables
- Before disconnecting the BLT600S battery tester, remember that the resistive windings are hot. Touching them can cause burns. Take care of your safety!
- Release the connection by detaching the load tip from the terminal, and then disconnect the clamp from the battery.
- Place the device in a safe place. Avoid contact of the heated load surface with flammable gases and materials!
- The device will automatically turn off 4 minutes after the last activity (pressing any button or performing a measurement). It is possible to manually turn off the tester by pressing the right button for a longer time (>1s).
Analysis of Results and Completion of Work
- Compare the obtained results with the recommended values of the battery manufacturer.
- If necessary, pass the battery for further diagnostics or replacement.
- Store the tester in a dry and safe place, away from heat sources and moisture.
