The tensioner is used to apply tension to the multi-ribbed belt in the belt drive. The multi-ribbed belt in a car is used to transmit drive to engine accessories such as the water pump, power steering pump, alternator, or air conditioning compressor. The multi-ribbed belt is an advancement of the classic V-belt, which, thanks to its larger friction surface, can transmit a significantly greater torque than a regular belt with a single rib. For the mechanism to function efficiently, it is necessary to maintain the appropriate tension of the belt. Therefore, mechanisms called tensioners are used. They continuously maintain the appropriate force, which helps to eliminate the slack in the belt that occurs during operation. Damage to the tensioner manifests as excessive slack in the belt drive, which generates very unpleasant squeaks. Additionally, there may be interruptions in the operation of the aforementioned engine accessories, resulting from breaks in torque transmission, which in turn can sometimes lead to their failure.
